Hello! Welcome to our blog. I hope you visit us every week.
My name is Olivier Coquillo. I was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. I moved to the US in 2004 after graduating from high school, and since then, I’ve lived in several states. I currently spend most of my time in the Sunshine State, enjoying the proximity to my motherland. I have a Bachelor and a Master of Science degree in civil engineering from Cooper Union, NY. My first full-time position as a Project Engineer started in March 2011 with Skanska USA Building. The best part of this first experience was getting to know and work with my team (#UNCampusWide). I also had the privilege of being assigned to a competent supervisor who recognized my lack of hands-on experience and helped me move in the right direction.
Let me try to explain why I started all of this and why I published my book: Construction Managers #Hired2Win. I have now worked with a lot of amazing people on various projects in three different states: NY, CA, and FL. I chose to start this blog to spark conversations between construction professionals and to push ourselves to think more about how we are welcoming new and future construction managers. There will also be many random posts related to winning in the workplace. Anyone who’d like to talk about the good aspects of construction management or share their frustrations in a constructive way and discuss solutions should feel free to contact me or send their blog post to firstname.lastname@example.org.
I also would love to see us engage in productive conversations with folks with 20+ years of experience in the construction industry (I’ll talk more about this in the next post). And I hope that whoever is reading these lines and any other content in the future has an open mind and is willing to “listen” and understand.
I will never claim that I know EVERYTHING about construction management. That’s impossible. In fact, I know that I don’t know many, many, and many things about construction. I can’t wait to learn from you and others who are willing to share their experience in the office and in the field … I don’t have my PE license; don’t ask me why 😄, though I will tell you if you ask. I don’t have PMP or any other letters next to my name. And I’ve never been promoted to Project Manager. So, if you’re looking for any kind of credibility associated with title or post-nominal letters, you are in the wrong place.
But if you are looking to have some fun learning about other people’s stories and opinions on what works and what can be better, then awesome! I’d like to create a space where all of us can freely talk about best (construction) management practices and share our views on roadblocks often encountered on our path to becoming the best construction managers we can be.
Thanks for your time. Like I said at the beginning, please visit us every week. And remember, #Hired2win is available on Amazon and in eBook format. It’s an introduction to construction management; a good read for you or anyone else who’s interested in a career in construction management.
Have a blessed experience!
